About the volunteering opportunity

Many people in Salzgitter cannot afford to buy enough healthy food. Since 2000, the Salzgitter-Tafel has been working to save surplus food and distribute it to people in need. To ensure that food distribution runs smoothly, we need volunteers to help collect, sort, and distribute food. Your efforts give people in difficult circumstances access to fresh and non-perishable food. 

Your Tasks

The following tasks are available for you to help with: 

  • Collecting food: Three volunteerswill have the opportunityto start as early as 7:00 a.m. to pick up food from donors using a food bank van (one person per van; three vans in operation). This activity will only take place after prior mutual agreement.
  • Sorting food: From 10:00 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m., you’ll work with the team to sort the collected food by type and shelf life.
  • Distributing food: From approximately 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the latest, you’ll help distribute food to the food bank’s clients.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity you don't need any German skills.
You enjoy pitching in and work well as part of a team. You don't need any other special prior knowledge. 

What to bring

Please bring appropriate work clothes and, if possible, leave jewelry or necklaces at home so that nothing gets lost during sorting. The food bank will provide aprons and gloves on site.

Important notice

Depending on the amount of food collected and the size of the team, the schedule may change slightly. In addition, minor additional tasks may be added on the day of the project. You’ll receive on-site training on the tasks and hygiene regulations. 

Coffee and cake will be provided for you on site.
